"OUR DAUGHTER THE WAIF”

20”X24”

$375 matted - $500 framed

There are approximately 350 million people living at or below the poverty level in India, almost 100 million people more than the total population of the United States.  Although India, which is the largest Democratic Republic  in the world, has made great strides in improving the quality of life for its citizens, the literacy rate is only 51% and the gross domestic product per person is $1600 per year.  OUR DAUGHTER THE WAIF is part of a troupe of beggars that work in Duridoo, India.  Groups of cheerful, fun loving, street children organized by adults, beg for money at every train station and on almost every street corner in India.  I offered OUR DAUGHTER THE WAIF some food which she rejected because it was not what she was sent to collect.   In spite of her innocent smile chances are that she will not live to be an adult.
