The town of Muara Teweh, which means “where two rivers meet”  is located in Central Kalamantan.  Kalamantan is the Indonesian portion of the island of Borneo.   Muara Teweh although small, is a major town and  is accessible only by river or float plane.  The next town up river from Muara Teweh is a small village whose only permanent building is a school.  Boats travel up and down the river constantly, taking supplies and people up stream as far as it is navigable, and people, produce and natural resources down stream to the ocean.
The only roads in Central Kalamantan are constructed by lumber companies who were given rights to harvest trees in vast tracks of land in the delta by Ex-President Sukarno who ruled Indonesia from 1950 to 1998.  Every year the rivers at Muara Teweh flood the streets for weeks at time. The floods, which began several years ago, are caused by the deforestation which has increased the rate of runoff during the rainy season on this Equatorial island.
