The Hirshhorn Museum of modern and contemporary art in Washington D.C.  is the result of a 1938 proposal by Smithsonian Secretary Dillon Ripley which became a reality when Joseph Hirshhorn agreed to give his collection to the Nation in 1966.  Mr. Hirshhorn came to the U.S. from Lativia at the age of four with his twelve siblings and widowed mother.  The family settled in Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.  At the age of 13 Harishhorn quit school and became a newsboy to help support his family.  Through his work at the Stock Exchange and mining businesses he became very wealthy.   Mr. Harishhorn began collecting art at the age of 17 and  by the time of his death in 1981 he had and had donated over 6,000 pieces to the Museum.
The Museum Complex was designed by Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, built with Federal funds and completed in 1974.
