Every year St. Thomas, as do most of the islands in the Caribbean,   celebrates Carnival.  A festival with a mix of African, West Indian and slave heritage.  In St. Thomas Carnival is celebrated in the Spring.  Two weeks of music, dance, food and drink, begins with various music competitions including calypso, pan, brass, foods and crafts.  Carnival is a time to renew old friendships and make new friend, which means spending time in the Carnival “village” which opens in the early evening and closes “whenever”.  Carnival  includes several colorful parades where “troupes” dressed in exotic costumes dance to their own music.  The largest, the Adult parade, is a day long event with the end of the day and the end of Carnival  is highlighted with a grand fireworks display over the picturesque  Charlotte Amalie harbor.
